Venice Beaches Guide

Venice Beaches

Venice's local waterfront is six stops along a few miles of Gulf shoreline, each with its own personality: the groomed city beach under its 1964 sail pavilion, the fishing pier and dog beach at Brohard, quiet Service Club, the wild shark-tooth shoreline of Caspersen, and Humphris Park at the inlet. This guide lists them local first, then nearby Nokomis, then the regional picks.

Quick Answers

Your Beach Questions, Answered Fast

Where do I park?
Venice Beach and Brohard are free, Service Club has free parking, and the Caspersen lot is closed: walk or ride in via the Venetian Waterway Park or park at South Brohard and walk south.
Can I bring my dog?
Only at Brohard Paw Park, Sarasota County's only off-leash dog beach, open daily 7 a.m. to dusk with separate small and large fenced sections. South Brohard beside it is humans only, and the county allows dogs on no other Venice beach.
Where do I find shark teeth?
Sift just above the waterline after a wave pulls back, and look for small black glossy teeth among the shell gravel. Caspersen is the classic shoreline for it.
Can I fish from the pier?
The 700-foot Brohard fishing pier at the Venice Fishing Pier is free, needs no license, and has a bait shop on the pier. Shore and surf fishing run along the Caspersen shoreline. See the fishing guide for the Venice picture.
Which beaches have beach wheelchairs?
Venice Beach loans beach wheelchairs at no charge from the lifeguards and has beach access mats; Brohard has a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk; Service Club uses an elevated walkway to the sand.
When is the best time to go?
Low tide for shark teeth and shelling, mornings for parking and cooler sand. The free lots at Venice Beach and Brohard make a last-minute visit easy; Caspersen requires the walk-in approach while its parking is closed.
Which beach for first-timers?
Venice Beach: family-friendly Gulf sand, the 1964 sail pavilion, free parking, restrooms and a food concession close to the sand. Details on each beach below.
Where can I launch a kayak or paddleboard?
Caspersen has a kayak launch, Nokomis Beach has a canoe and kayak launch plus boat ramp, and the bay-side launches in the Venice area live in the boating guide's kayak and paddle launch points.

Every answer above is tied to its named location; nothing is a blanket claim across the whole shoreline, because these beaches really are that different.

The 700-foot Venice Fishing Pier reaches over the Gulf from Brohard Park: fishing from it is free and needs no license, and a bait shop sits on the pier. The beach beside the park is part of the city's shoreline.

Brohard Paw Park (1850 Harbor Dr S) is Sarasota County's only off-leash dog beach, with separate fenced small and large dog sections, open daily 7 a.m. to dusk. Parking is free, and restrooms are adjacent. The bait shop's hours are not confirmed here: check the pier's own listings.

South Brohard Park

At 1900 Harbor Dr S, just south of the fishing pier.

The stretch of beach immediately south of the Venice Fishing Pier, with direct beach access. It shares the Brohard Park shoreline and is the practical parking-and-walk spot while Caspersen's lot is closed: visitors park here and walk or ride south along the water.

South Brohard is humans only: dogs are not permitted on the beach here, and the off-leash area is the fenced Paw Park just north.

Service Club Park

At 1190 Harbor Dr S, the quieter beach access.

The calm, neighborhood-feel beach access on the same strip of Gulf shoreline, reached by a 370-foot walkway across the dunes. Parking is free. It is the spot locals pick when Venice Beach's main lot is busy and they want the same sand with less commotion.

Caspersen Beach

At 4100 Harbor Dr S, the shark-tooth hunting capital.

Full Caspersen Beach Guide

Largely natural and one of the longest undeveloped stretches of shoreline in Sarasota County, Caspersen is the top shark-tooth hunting beach in the area: the gravel along the natural shoreline holds fossilized teeth, and a patient hour with a sifter usually turns up at least a few. There is a boardwalk, a nature trail and a kayak launch.

Current Status Notice

The access road and vehicle parking lots remain closed from storm damage, and the restrooms and playground are closed. The beach is open only for pedestrian and bicycle access from South Brohard Beach or via the Venetian Waterway Park, with no vehicle parking available. Subject to change: check the county page before heading out.
