01 — This Week's Tips

Week of September 8, 2026

Local Deals

Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market runs every Saturday 7 AM-1 PM along State Street: local produce, honey, baked goods, and coffee at genuinely local prices.

Jazz Thursdays at the Sarasota Art Museum are free and open-air on the Klein Plaza (1001 S. Tamiami Trail), with the Colin Leonard New Generation Quartet on deck this week, 5:30-8 PM.

Siesta Key Farmers Market, Sundays 9 AM-2 PM in Siesta Village: produce, artisans, baked goods, and live music under the palms.

Upcoming Events

The Fernando Ferrarone Quartet plays Fogartyville at 8 PM Friday Sept 11 (WSLR+Fogartyville, 525 Kumquat Court): $25 members, $30 non-members, $15 students.

Legacy: Motown & More! runs at Florida Studio Theatre with weekend shows through Oct 4: a high-energy Motown revue that sells well.

The Thalhe Festival pairs an inclusive dance gala at the Sarasota Opera House on Sunday Sept 13, 4-6 PM, closing out its weekend run.

Seasonal: Mid-September Living

Mid-September is the climatological peak of the Atlantic hurricane season (historically right around Sept 10). This is the week to review your wind and flood coverage and to know your evacuation zone.

Sign up for Sarasota County emergency alerts at scgov.net and keep the ReadySarasota app installed for real-time storm updates and routes.

Sea turtle nesting continues on Gulf beaches into October: respect marked nests and keep beach lights dim after dark.

Gulf water temperatures stay in the mid-80s through early fall, so swimming remains great, and afternoon thunderstorms are a daily possibility: plan beach mornings.

Local Living Tips

Florida has no state income tax. If you just moved, ask your employer to update withholding to Florida to put that money back in your pocket immediately.

Register your vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency at the county tax collector office. Bring proof of insurance, your previous title, and your new address.

Early fall is the classic window to negotiate an annual lease before the winter snowbird flow; landlords often offer move-in specials this month.

If this is your first year in Florida, file for the homestead exemption with the county property appraiser by March 1 to cap future assessment growth.
