Venice, Florida
Caspersen Beach
The longest natural beach in Sarasota County and the place people come to find fossilized shark teeth. The gravel along the natural shoreline holds them, and a patient hour with a sifter usually turns up at least a few. Note the access situation below: the parking lot is still closed after the 2024 storms, so plan the walk-in approach.
Current Status Notice
The Harbor Drive access washed out in the 2024 storms. The parking lot, restrooms and playground are closed pending repairs, and the park is open to pedestrian and bicycle access only, reachable via the Venetian Waterway Park. No vehicle parking is available: the practical route is to park at South Brohard and walk or ride in. Check the county and city pages before you go.

01 · Location
Location
Caspersen Beach is at 4100 Harbor Drive S in Venice, about two miles south of the Venice Fishing Pier. It is a Sarasota County park, the longest natural beach in the county, with the Gulf on one side and the Intracoastal across the road. The Venetian Waterway Park trail runs alongside it, which is now the practical way in.
02 · Parking
Parking
- The Caspersen Harbor Drive parking lot is closed and fenced off pending repairs after the 2024 storms.
- Free parking at South Brohard Beach, about a mile and a half north, then walk or bike in along the Venetian Waterway Park.
- Parking anywhere along Harbor Drive near the park is at your own risk; use the designated lots only.
03 · Facilities
Facilities
- A nature trail and a kayak launch at the park
- A boardwalk leading toward the shoreline
- Shore and surf fishing along the natural beach
- Restrooms and the playground are closed while the lot is repaired; plan accordingly.
04 · Accessibility
Accessibility
- A boardwalk runs from the park toward the shoreline at Caspersen.
- The closed parking lot makes vehicle access the barrier right now: the practical route is the flat, paved Venetian Waterway Park trail from South Brohard.
05 · Dogs & Pets
Dogs & Pets
Dogs are not allowed on Caspersen Beach. Sarasota County prohibits pets on its Gulf beaches. The nearest legal off-leash dog beach is Brohard Paw Park, about a mile and a half north, with city hours of 7 a.m. to dusk. See the pet-friendly guide for the details.
06 · Food & Drink
Food & Drink
There is no food service on site at Caspersen. Sharky's on the Pier and the Brohard concessions sit about two miles north at the fishing pier, and downtown Venice is a short drive for a proper meal. Bring water and snacks in a daypack, since the walk-in approach means carrying what you need.
07 · Chairs & Umbrellas
Chairs & Umbrellas
No rentals at Caspersen, and no vending on the beach. Bring your own chair, umbrella, sifter and water; the walk-in route makes a light kit worth it. Shark-tooth hunters usually work standing at the waterline anyway.
08 · Water & Activities
Water & Activities
- Shark-tooth hunting at the waterline, the signature Venice activity: sifter in hand, look for small black glossy triangles among the shell gravel after a wave pulls back. Low tide is prime time.
- Shore and surf fishing along the natural beach; surf casting for pompano, whiting and flounder works from the sand: a Florida saltwater license is required for most anglers 16 and older; confirm current FWC rules first and see the fishing guide's Venice page.
- Beachcombing and shelling along the undeveloped shoreline
- No lifeguards at Caspersen: swim at your own risk, and watch the Gulf conditions; currents and rip risk change daily.
