Safety alert · Venice Inlet jetties

Humphris Park and the South Jetty walkway are closed

Humphris Park and the South Jetty walkway at Venice Inlet remain closed after severe damage from Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The City of Venice states conditions are unsafe and visitors should not go there; there is no reopening date, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers owns the jetties with major repairs still years away (a maintenance report is expected in November 2026).

The North Jetty at Nokomis remains open, and the Venice Inlet channel itself stays an active, maintained navigation inlet. The closure applies to the jetty walkway and the park, not the channel.

Tide times are NOAA predictions. Actual conditions may vary due to wind, weather, and barometric pressure. For the most precise local reading, use the NOAA station nearest your pass.

Gulf Coast Passes & Inlets

Every pass has its own personality, and each one changes with tides, weather, dredging and shoaling. Tides change daily. Click any chart button for live NOAA tide predictions. Venice Inlet

Just north of Venice, Sarasota County

Depth & Navigation

Regularly dredged, marked channel; this guide does not publish static depths. Stay inside the marked channel and keep clear of the jetties and sandbars, which shift at the inlet mouth.

Conditions & Cautions

Conditions change with tides, weather and dredging. Check current NOAA charts (US Harbors carries the NOAA chart for Venice Inlet) and live NOAA station VENF1 data before transiting.

Hazards

South Jetty walkway and Humphris Park remain CLOSED for storm repairs, do not go there; the North Jetty at Nokomis remains open. Sandbars shift at the inlet mouth outside the jetties and strong currents run through the marked channel.

Tide Station

Live conditions near the inlet are reported by NOAA station VENF1 (Venice). Tide predictions use NOAA station 8725889 (Venice).

Big Sarasota Pass

Between south Lido Key and north Siesta Key

Depth & Navigation

Deep and wide inside the pass, but the outer bar is unmarked, shoaling and constantly moving. This guide does not publish static depths for the bar.

Conditions & Cautions

High-caution, local-knowledge pass, not a recommended transit for unfamiliar boaters. Check current NOAA charts, the Local Notice to Mariners and live conditions before approaching; no navigation aids can be relied on.

Hazards

The outer bar is unmarked and shifts constantly, and navigation aids have been removed in whole or part. Conditions change after every storm and tide; treat the pass as local-knowledge-only.

Tide Station

No dedicated NOAA tide station sits at the pass. Closest stations: Sarasota Bay (8726083) and the Big Sarasota Pass / Jasmine Point station 8726034 for the adjacent Gulf side.

Midnight Pass

Between Siesta Key and Casey Key (south end of Siesta Key, near Turtle Beach)

Depth & Navigation

Reopened by the 2024 hurricanes after being closed since 1983. Sarasota County and county engineers describe it as a wild pass, not a navigable pass: no permanent jetties, no Coast Guard markers and shifting sand. Depths change with every storm and tide; none are published here.

Conditions & Cautions

Not a recommended or routine transit. There are no markers or jetties, and conditions cannot be guaranteed at any tide stage. Check Sarasota County updates and current charts before approaching.

Hazards

Unstabilized natural inlet with shifting sandbars and no permanent aids, monitored by multiple agencies. Tide data from the nearby Sarasota station is reference only and is not a transit guide.

Tide Station

Tide information for Midnight Pass uses the nearby Sarasota tide station data (NOAA 8726083, Sarasota Bay), for reference only; the pass itself is unmonitored by any in-pass station.

New Pass

Between Lido Key and Siesta Key, behind Mote Marine (1700 Ken Thompson Pkwy area)

Depth & Navigation

Historically shoaled and unreliable since channel markers were removed. Depths vary with tides and storms; this guide does not publish static depths.

Conditions & Cautions

Local knowledge and current charts required. This guide does not publish transit windows it cannot verify; check live NOAA data and local reports before approaching.

Hazards

Channel markers have been removed; shifting sandbars and strong currents during tide changes. No dedicated NOAA tide station sits at the pass.

Tide Station

Closest NOAA station: Sarasota, Sarasota Bay (8726083). Big Sarasota Pass station 8726034 also applies to the adjacent Gulf side.

Longboat Pass

Between Longboat Key and Anna Maria Island

Depth & Navigation

Stabilized inlet with a drawbridge; this guide does not publish static depths.

Conditions & Cautions

Confirm current depths and conditions with NOAA before transiting; the drawbridge opens on request and the channel should not be blocked while waiting.

Hazards

Strong tidal currents in the channel and shifting shoals at the Gulf entrance; do not wait in the channel.

Big Carlos Pass

Between Estero Island (Fort Myers Beach) and Lovers Key

Depth & Navigation

Natural, unstabilized pass subject to shoaling around the inlet mouth; no static depth published here.

Conditions & Cautions

Conditions change with tide and weather; check current NOAA charts, the Local Notice to Mariners and live data before crossing.

Hazards

Shoaling at the inlet mouth, unmarked shallows and shifting sandbars after storms.

Gordon Pass

Between Keewaydin Island and Naples

Depth & Navigation

Primary Gulf access for Naples, regularly maintained; this guide does not publish static depths.

Conditions & Cautions

Heavily trafficked channel; check live NOAA data and current charts before transiting.

Hazards

Strong tidal currents in the narrow channel, heavy boat traffic from the Naples fleet and crossing traffic at the inlet mouth.

Pre-Departure Checklist

  • Check live tide data for your pass and read that pass's caution notes on this page
  • Check the NOAA marine forecast and match wind and sea state to your vessel and crew
  • Check pass hazards (recent storms can shift channels overnight), current charts and the Local Notice to Mariners
  • Check fuel, safety gear, and VHF radio
  • File a float plan with someone on shore

Pass Navigation Warning

Gulf Coast inlets shift constantly. Always check the latest NOAA chart updates, local notices to mariners, and current tide conditions before crossing any pass. When in doubt, wait for a local guide vessel or ask at a nearby marina. Respect the bar. It changes after every storm.
